Why did you choose the USNA ME Department when you were job hunting?
- I liked that there was an emphasis on quality teaching. I really wanted to teach, but not if it wasn't a priority for the position. I also like the idea that I could spend "hands on" time in the lab and bring students in to participate. I was attracted to Mechanical Engineering because it was a broad discipline. I knew I would learn a lot outside of my particular area.
- Outside of the occupational benefits, what benefits are there to your engineering education?
- It is really practical. I don't have to rely on someone else's "expertise" when it comes to repairs or buying products - I usually am able to understand the technology and call people out on exaggerations (or outright lies!)
- What do you do outside of the working day?
- My kids are still pretty young so I spend a lot of time taking care of my family. I participate in girl scouts, teach Sunday school and try to run every few days. Recently I have spent a bit of time training my new dog. I really like to travel with my family and do things outside, like hiking and camping.
- What do you think makes the USNA ME Department unique?
- The faculty: they are very collegiate and supportive and all work together for the good of their students, despite the diversity of backgrounds and expertise.
