Baalbek

The ancient city of Baalbek is located at the northern end of the Baqa Valley in the Republic of Lebanon. The city was originally named after the Phoenician god Baal and was later renamed Heliopolis and became a major worship site for the Roman god Jupiter. The standing pillars are from the ruins of the Temple of Jupiter, completed sometime in the first century CE. Adjacent is the Temple of Bacchus, dedicated to the goddess Astarte.
