PhD Candidate, University of Chicago Elena D. Corbett is nearing completion of her Ph.D. from the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago. She has been the recipient of numerous fellowships in support of her research and language training, including a Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Abroad (DDRA) award and a Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA) fellowship. Her doctoral thesis, entitled, “Jordan First: a History of the Intellectual and Political Economy of Jordanian Antiquity,” explores the use of antiquity as symbolic capital for purposes of identity- and consensus-building in Jordan. Starting with the Late Ottoman era, Elena analyzes how intellectual, socioeconomic and political trends have, in the context of various moments in Jordan’s history, molded the framework within which various secular and religious antiquities are woven into Jordan’s national narrative. Parts of this narrative are hotly contested by multiple interest groups within the Kingdom. Elena has participated in numerous international conferences and currently has manuscripts under review for publication. While getting her Master’s in Archaeology from UChicago’s NELC Department, Elena made friends with her favorite archaeologist and somehow convinced him to marry her. She and Joey Corbett, also nearing completion of his Ph.D., have spent many happy hours together exploring the beautiful rock art of southern Jordan. They make their home in Edgewater, MD with feline family members Stinky and Whitey.
