After joining Ship Division of the National Physical Laboratory as a Senior Scientific Officer, Dr Dand specialised in the study of ship behaviour in shallow water. This involved the development of experiment techniques using physical models and the production of computational models.

His work on shallow water effects, especially those related to ship collisions resulted in the award of two silver medals by the RINA and promotion to the grade of Individual Merit SPSO by the time of the formation of NMI Ltd, a privatised organisation formed from, among others, Ship Division NPL and a progenitor of British Maritime Technology Ltd (BMT).

In BMT Dr Dand developed his work on ship behaviour and was instrumental in writing a ship manoeuvring simulation which is now used extensively in consultancy work. He is now a Director of BMT SeaTech Ltd and carries out consultancy connected with marine impact assessments in port design, expert witness work for the Admiralty Court, physical model studies on high speed and other vessels and other maritime matters. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 1994 and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 1996.
