WILLIAM O. GRAY
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Mr. Gray holds a Mechanical Engineering
degree from Yale, and a Naval Architecture degree from the University of
Michigan with Honors.
He served three and a half years in the
U.S. Navy, mostly at sea on a destroyer escort, where he became qualified
for command.
He spent four years with Bethlehem Steel,
when it was the world's largest shipbuilder, mainly in preliminary design
of merchant ships, and especially tankers.
During twenty-two and a half years with
Exxon Mr. Gray first held managerial roles in early, LNG, LPG and V/ULCC
development. He supervised studies of large tankers up to 1,300,000 DWT,
and also studies of pollution prevention and safety measures. He managed
Exxon's Arctic Tanker Project including icebreaking experiments with
115,000 DWT tanker "MANHATTAN'.
During the '70s Mr. Gray was the main oil
industry spokesman at IMO, and before the U.S. Congress, during
development of MARPOL '73, and TSPP'78, work for which he received an API
Citation and the Admiral Shepheard Award for Achievement in Merchant
Marine Safety.
During his final seven years with Exxon Mr.
Gray was the world wide operations coordinator for ocean tankers and
marine terminals, managing a tanker fleet that at that time was the
world's largest.
Mr. Gray joined The Skaarup Group in 1987
and initially operated the Skaarup Fleet. From 1990 onward, he specialized
in tanker and safety projects for several groups-including the National
Academy of Sciences and INTERTANKO as a Council Member. He is a Trustee of
Webb Institute, a Member of the ABS Council, DNV's North American
Committee, and LR's American Committee. In 1992 he received a Public
Service Commendation from US Coast Guard, and in 1995 became Life Fellow
of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, SNAME.
In Decemberl994 Mr. Gray formed and became
President of Gray Maritime Company, a marine consultancy. Principle
clients include INTERTANKO, shipowners and shipyards. He is also a
Director of US shipping Company Attransco. He has been a frequent speaker
on marine safety for API, BIMCO, ICS, INTERTANKO, MarineLog, Seatrade, and
others.
Mr. Gray and his wife Faith live in Darien,
Connecticut, where she is a kindergarten teacher, and where they monitor
activities of their five grown children, and nine grandchildren.
