Frequently Asked Questions

"What will the student section do?"
The purpose of the student section is to foster interest and excitement in disciplines related to Naval Engineering.  The activities executed by the student section are actually decided on and planned by the student members and include

  • field trips

  • guest speakers

  • participation in engineering design contests.

All activities are supported by a team of officer and faculty advisors who are most interested in helping the students achieve their professional and academic goals.

"What will joining the section do for me?"
Participating in the student section will help active midshipmen learn more about their career options within and outside of the military.  Networking is a key benefit to active members.  As most members quickly find out, our discipline consists of a relatively small and close-knit group of influential people.

Other benefits of membership include:

  • Subscription to highly respected technical journals

  • Reduced rates on noted publications on Naval Engineering topics, including texts used for many EN courses.

  • Graduate school scholarship opportunities

"What are ASNE and SNAME?"
Both ASNE and SNAME are widely recognized and respected organizations dedicated to advancing the art, science and practice of naval engineering, encouraging the exchange information, sponsoring research, offering career guidance and supporting education, and enhancing the professional status and integrity of their members.

There are some relatively subtle differences in the parent organizations; ASNE tends to concentrate more on military applications, while SNAME concentrates more on commercial applications of naval engineering.  However, there is a great deal of overlap between the two societies, in interests as well as in membership.

"Why are the ASNE & SNAME student sections 'joint?' "
While there are differences in the parent organizations, the societies are very similar in their missions.  Often, many people (especially students) are attracted to both organizations.  Realizing this, in recent years ASNE and SNAME have decided to offer joint student memberships to their organizations; that is, when joining one of the two societies, a student automatically receives membership in the other society, too (for free!).  Therefore, students of one society are automatically members of both societies.  For these reasons, it made sense to join the student groups here at USNA.

"Who do I contact for more information?"
Please contact the midshipmen officers or the faculty and officer representatives for more information.  Also see the web sites of the parent organizations for more general information.
