Chemistry is often defined as the study of matter and its changes and is sometimes referred to as
"The Central Science." Nearly every aspect of our lives has a connection to basic chemical principles.
The USNA requires all of its students to complete a rigorous academic year of laboratory based
chemistry because the future officers that graduate from this institution will find that chemistry plays an
important role in everyday and wartime operations.
The major goals of our Chemistry Program are: to provide a broad background in chemistry to enable a midshipman
candidate to proceed in any scientific or engineering study at the Naval Academy;
to teach practical applications of chemistry as applied to the Naval Services; to develop laboratory skills that
reinforce and supplement the knowledge learned in the classroom and to develop a critical thinking approach to problem
solving.
We teach Chemistry at NAPS at three different levels - Advanced, Intermediate and Foundation. Each program provides
the necessary foundation for Academy success. The faculty and staff are dedicated to helping students develop a
systematic approach to problem solving, good study habits and a broad base of fundamental science knowledge necessary
to operate in today's technical world. These skills will go a long way in our student's future success - in their
academic endeavors, military achievement and service in command, citizenship and government.
