NAVY FALLS AT DUQUESNE, 6-3,
FOR FIRST LOSS OF 2004-05 SEASON
PITTSBURGH, PA -- Navy's 'A' hockey team dropped its first game of the 2004-05 season Sunday afternoon, falling to Duquesne, 6-3, at the Shady Side Academy rink in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Duquesne's Dukes grabbed an early 1-0 advantage with a goal at 4:10 of the first period, but the Midshipmen pulled even at 1-1 when sophomore Patrick Sullivan recorded his second goal of the season at 14:07, assisted by sophomores Jay Alspach and Joe Liles.

Navy took a 2-1 lead 57 seconds into the second period when senior forward Keith McGilvray registered his second goal this year, assisted by Sullivan and freshman Eric Smitley. But the Dukes regained the lead, 3-2, with a power play tally at 3:17 and a shorthanded goal at 17:02 during the penalty-filled middle stanza.

The Mids had a golden opportunity to turn the game in their favor, starting the third period with a two-man advantage and with Duquesne's starting goaltender Clint Hazen serving a 10-minute misconduct penalty. Navy appeared to capitalize on those advantages when McGilvray tallied his second goal of the game, assisted by Sullivan and Thomas, at 1:02 to tie the game at 3-3.

But the momentum turned back quickly when the Dukes' top offensive gun, Mike Papciak, banged home two goals in a 32-second span to give his team a 5-3 lead with 18 minutes remaining in the final stanza. Duquesne added a sixth goal, on a power play at 10:23, to complete the scoring and send the Mids home with their first loss of the 2004-05 campaign.

Dobie made 29 saves in suffering his first loss of the season and deserved a better fate.

"What killed us were breakdowns in our own defensive zone, and our special teams," observed Navy coach Rick Randazzo. "Duquesne was called for 13 penalties, and we scored just one power play goal. We have to do better than that. And those two goals in 32 seconds, just after we tied the game at 3-3, were back-breakers."

Navy gave up two power play goals to Duquesne, and the Mids also surrendered a shorthanded goal while on a power play of their own.
