NAVY EDGES MARYLAND, 3-2,
TO START NEW SEASON AT 2-0
Senior Jeff Fallat recorded his first goal of the season with 14:17 remaining in the third period, and junior netminder Ryan Dobie turned in several outstanding saves down the stretch, to lead Navy's 'A' ice hockey team to a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Maryland Saturday night at Bowie Ice Rink.

With the victory, the Mids improved to 2-0 on the young season, while the Terrapins fell to 0-1.

One of the two most pleasant developments in Navy's first two games has been the play of the Fallat-Bill Knips-John Bogdan forward line, and that unit accounted for two of the Mids' three goals last night.  Their first goal came late in the first period, after Maryland had taken a 1-0 lead at the 1:22 mark, when Fallat and Knips worked the puck to Bogdan, who scored at 13:46 to knot the game at 1-1.  It was Bogdan's second goal in as many nights.

Navy's second most pleasant development this year, the play of senior John Naughton at forward (who moved up to a wing slot after spending last season on defense), contributed to the Mids' second goal as junior Sam Kunst and sophomore Chris Schnappinger worked the puck to Naughton in a power play, and Naughton banged it home just 35 seconds into the second stanza to put Navy ahead, 2-1.  Naughton had also tallied twice in Friday night's 12-3 triumph over Virginia.

Maryland evened the score at 2-2 with an even strength goal with just 1:01 remaining in the second period, setting the stage for Fallat's heroics in the third period.  Knips and freshman Donnie "DH" Horner picked up assists on Fallat's game winning goal, which came at the 5:43 mark. Although the Mids were outshot 11-8 in that final stanza, Dobie and the Navy defense turned aside everything the Terps threw their way to earn the victory.

Dobie finished with 31 saves and lowered his goals against average to 2.99.

Navy's next outings come next weekend when they travel to Morgantown, W. Va. to face the Mountaineers Saturday (October 2) at 4:15 p.m., then head to Pittsburgh for a 1:00 p.m. showdown with Duquesne on Sunday (October 3).  The Mids open their home season the following weekend, hosting West Virginia on Friday, October 8 at 7:35 p.m. and Scranton on Saturday, October 9 at 3 p.m.
