LAUREL, MD (September 30, 2006) -- Junior Nick Schwob scored a pair of
goals, including the game winner with four minutes left in the third period,
to lead Navy's ice hockey team to an 8-6 season-opening win over the
University of Maryland Saturday night at Garden's Ice House in Laurel, MD.

With the win, Navy is 1-0 on the young season.  Last weekend's scheduled
opening game was cancelled and will likely not be re-scheduled.

The Midshipmen threatened to turn the game into a rout early by scoring the
first three goals of the game, starting with a Kevin Krmpotich tally at 4:13
while Navy enjoyed a two-man advantage, with classmates Jay Alspach and Alex
Sandroni picking up assists.  Sophomore Charlie Daniel then extended the
Mids' lead to 3-0 with goals at 6:53 and 10:38.

Maryland scored twice before the first period ended to pull the Terps within
3-2 and then tied the game at 3-3 early in the second period, but later in
the second stanza senior Patrick Sullivan scored an exciting shorthanded
breakaway goal to give Navy a 4-3 lead after two periods.

In the third, senior Jay Alspach just 13 seconds after the opening face-off,
followed by a breakaway tally from Schwob at 1:30 to give Navy a seemingly
commanding 6-3 advantatge.  But Maryland pulled within 6-5 with goals at
1:48 and 10:10 -- the second coming on a power play.

Schwob picked up his second goal of the night at 16:04 off a beautiful pass
from senior assistant team captain Joe Liles at 16:04, while the Mids were
on a power play, to put the game away.  Sophomore Matt Gross had the other
assist.

The pesky Terps pulled within 7-6 at 17:19, but Krmpotich scored a shorthand
empty net goal at 18:46 to give the Mids the final magin of victory.
Sandroni had the lone assist on the Krmpotich goal, the second of the night
for the senior co-captain, who stole the puck off a Maryland forward's stick
and fed the puck to Krmpotich, who slid it into the empty net.

Junior Sean Ublacker started in goal for Navy and made 7 saves in his 29:12
of work.  Roughly halfway through the game, as planned before the game by
the Mids' coaches, Ublacker was replaced by freshman Eric Anderson.  In his
first action ever in a Navy uniform, the Minnesota native made 12 saves in
his 30:48 in the nets.

Senior Jerone Chernock recorded 27 saves for Maryland, as Navy outshot the
Terrapins, 34-25.

Navy plays its second game of the season at Lehigh tomorrow (Sunday), with
the opening face-off set for 3:00 p.m.  Lehigh's scheduled season-opener at
Towson last night was postponed.
