WEST POINT, NY (Sunday, October 7, 2006) --
Navy's ice hockey team scored three power play goals during an 11 1/2-minute
span in the second period to overcome a one-goal deficit, en route to a 5-2
victory over Scranton Sunday afternoon in an Eastern Collegiate Hockey
Association (ECHA) game played at the U.S. Military Academy's Tate Rink.
It marked the first time that Navy's ice hockey team had played at the U.S.
Military Academy's Tate Rink.
With the victory, the Midshipmen improved to 4-0 overall this season and 3-0 in
the ECHA.
After a scoreless first period, Scranton got on the scoreboard first with an
even strength goal from Matt Torstrup just 1:10 into the second period. It
would be the only time the Ice Royals would lead all day.
Navy evened the score at 1-1 on a power play goal from sophomore Nolan Anliker
at 6:28, the lone assist going to senior Kevin Krmpotich. About five minutes
later, at 11:23, the Mids took their first lead of the game when sophomore Jeff
Martin stole the puck inside the Scranton zone and fired the puck past Ice Royal
netminder David Skinner to put Navy up, 2-1.
The Mids stretched their lead to two, at 3-1, when Krmpotich scored a power play
tally at the 18:00 mark of the second stanza, assists going to Anliker and
senior defenseman Alex Sandroni.
Navy put the game away in the third period, thanks to an even strength goal from
Andrew Stoner at the 7:32 mark, assisted by Derek Johnson and Charlie Daniel,
followed by a power play tally from senior Patrick Sullivan at 11:54 to put the
Mids up, 5-1. Krmpotich had the lone assist on Sullivan's goal, which was
originally credited to Krmpotich; it was later determined that Sullivan had
deflected Krmpotich's shot.
Scranton completed the scoring with an even strength goal from Mike Pace at
15:21.
Freshman goaltender Eric Anderson finished with 20 saves for Navy, while his
counterpart in the Ice Royal cage, Skinner, recorded 46, as Navy outshot
Scranton by a wide margin, 51-22. Both teams were whistled for eight minor
penalties.
Navy is idle until next weekend when they travel to West Chester Saturday
afternoon and Penn State on Sunday afternoon.
