ODENTON, MD (Sunday, November 19, 2006) -- Navy's ice hockey team peppered
UMBC with 71 shots on goal en route to a 7-2 victory Sunday afternoon at
Piney Orchard Ice Rink in a non-league game that was far more lopsided than
the final score indicated.

With the victory, the Midshipmen improved to 9-4-1 overall this season,
while the Retrievers fell to 11-4-0 with the loss.

Despite being outshot 26-3, UMBC got the only goal of the first period when
Ta Ung fired a shot that was stopped by Navy netminder Eric Anderson, but
then slid the rebound past Anderson's outstretched right leg pad at the
14:42 mark. It would be the Retrievers' only lead of the day.

Just 1:34 into the second stanza, the Mids tied the score when Kevin
Krmpotich fired a wrist shot into the top of the net that eluded UMBC
goaltender Andrew Davis, with Jay Alspach and Jim Doherty picking up
assists. Navy took its first lead of the afternoon less than a minute later
when Nick Schwob stole the puck while the Mids were killing a penalty and
scored a shorthanded tally at the 2:34 mark. Navy then extended its lead to
3-1 later in the same period when Nolan Anliker redirected a shot past
Davis, assists going to linemates Patrick Sullivan and Jeff Martin, at
15:17.

The Midshipmen blew the game open in the third period, starting with
Schwob's second unassisted goal of the day, on a power play, at 4:44. UMBC
trimmed the Navy lead to 4-2 with an Alex Post goal while the Retrivers were
enjoying a 5-on-3 power play.

But Navy scored three unanswered goals over the game's final 13 minutes to
put the game away.

Andrew Stoner fired a beatiful wrist shot past Davis at 8:12 to put the Mids
up, 5-2. On a power play, defenseman Donnie Horner fired a wicked slap shot
from the blue line that found the back of the net before Davis could react,
assists going to Stoner and Derek Johnson, at 11:59. And Nick Hinkley
finished the scoring when he tipped in a shot at 15:23, assisted by Horner
and Alex Sandroni.

Navy put 71 shots on goal, compared to only 14 for the Retrivers. Anderson
recorded 12 saves for the Mids, while UMBC's Davis had 64 stops. Referee
Scott Pomento called a total of 25 penalties, 16 of them against UMBC,
including a 10-minute misconduct against senior co-captain Chris Post. Navy
was 3-for-13 on its power play attempts, while UMBC was 1-for-7.

The Midshipmen are idle for the Thanksgiving break until they travel to
Philadelphia to face Drexel at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, December 1 -- the night
before the traditional Army-Navy football game which is being played again
at Lincoln Financial Field in Philly.

BRIEF POINTS: Navy's coaches announced following today's game that the
USNA's new McMullen Rink that is now under construction will NOT be ready in
time for the Mids' first home game on Friday, January 5 as originally
planned....as a result of construction delays, Navy's first real home game
in the new rink will now likely be during the Crabpot Tournament on February
10....The Mids' first four games in 2007 will be played at Piney Orchard,
and other "home" contests will be played in Fort Washington and College
Park....Charlie Hymen replaced Aaron Erzinger as the extra forward in
Sunday's lineup....it was a disappointing display of poor sportsmanship at
the end of Sunday's game when some UMBC players tried to disrupt the
traditional postgame handshake by punching and tripping Navy players Kevin
Krmpotich and Jim Doherty.
