Lab Report Guidelines (groups)

All labs for this class will require a formal lab report to be turned in.  The guidelines for this report are listed below.  Failure to follow the guidelines will be detrimental to your lab grade.
  • Reports must be written using a word processor.
  • All reports must have a separate title page with:  lab #, lab title, names of all members of the lab group, and the course section #.
  • Be sure to answer all questions asked in the lab.
  • Some questions may be answered with simple lists or rankings.  However, questions that ask for explanation or discussion should be answered with complete sentences. When an interpretation or discussion is asked for, be sure to clearly explain your answer.
  • Questions must be clearly labeled.  The question does not have to be reproduced along with the answer, but it should be clear which question is being answered.
  • Include all requested plots and imagery with the report in a logical sequential order.  Make sure all such plots and images are clearly labeled.  Plots should have titles, axes labels, and units.
  • Neatness, style, spelling, and grammar will affect the report grade, so be sure to be careful in this regard (e.g., spell check, proofread, etc.).
  • Turn in only one lab report per group.  Make sure it is one consistent, coherent document (e.g., same font, style, etc.). However, you should work through each problem together, as you will be responsible for understanding all the material.
  • Material in labs is fair game for exams and quizzes.  It is suggested that copies be made for all members of the lab group for their records.
  • Lab reports must be turned in at the beginning of class the day they are due (usually the following week, unless noted otherwise).
  • Late lab reports will be penalized 10% per day for up to six days.  The penalty will be assessed, starting at the beginning of class.  After six days, a grade of zero will be given (although it will still be graded if it is turned in).

Any other homework assignments do not need to follow the lab report guidelines for format and style, but answers to questions should be clear, especially any that require discussion of results. In general each student will be responsible for their own homework (though help from others is allowed to help you understand the problem)
