News Report Guidelines

Every week, each lab group will each present a short (~5 min) report on one recent news items in polar science at the beginning of the class on Monday. Make sure that your presentation is ready to go at the start of the class period. During the week before, the group should search web sites and articles for news about polar science.  These can be on any topic covered in class or other related topics, but should have some science focus. Human-interest stories can be used, but should have some relevance to the polar environment.

A highly recommended place to look for stories is  the NSIDC web page. Other online places to look for stories can be found on the  SO426 links page. Offline sites, available from the library, include:

Science
Nature
EOS Transactions
Washington Post
New York Times
USA Today
Discovery
National Geographic

The presentation should consist of no more than a few slides, a short description of the news, and some insight into the importance of the event for the polar environment (e.g. does a recently observed lengthening of the melt season in Greenland indicate that the climate is warming?). You will probably be asked to answer a few questions about the news item.

Duties may be split among the group however it is most convenient (online vs. library, collect vs. present, etc.); however, the group as a whole is responsible for gathering and presenting all of the news for the week and all members will receive the same grade.

Be sure that your handouts or PowerPoint presentations are fully referenced.  Credit the news source and any image that you show.
