Some material may be included without attribution, and as such, it is for educational purposes only.
Chapter 1 - Introduction to the Polar Environment Chapter 2 - Part I - Arctic Exploration Chapter 2 - Part II - Antarctic Exploration Chapter 2 - Part III - Modern Exploration and Science Chapter 3 - Sea Ice Part I - Overview of Ice and Ice Types Chapter 3 - Sea Ice Part II - Ice Formation and Properties Chapter 3 - Sea Ice Part III - Thermodynamics of Sea Ice Chapter 3 - Sea Ice Part IV - Dynamics of Sea Ice Chapter 3 - Part V - Remote Sensing of Sea Ice Chapter 4 - Part I - Arctic Oceanography Chapter 4 - Part II - Antarctic Oceanography Chapter 4 - Part III - Convection Chapter 5 - Meteorology and Climatology Chapter 6 - Glaciers, Ice Sheets and Icebergs Chapter 7 - Part I - Paleoclimate Chapter 7 - Part II - Climate Variability
Additional Texts (on reserve in Nimitz) Best for this class: Ice in the Ocean, Wadhams - good overview of sea ice, and short sections on oceanography and climate (chapters 1-4, 7-8 most relevant) Ocean Circulation, open university - sections 5.5 and 6.3 has good easy to follow info on polar oceans Arctic and Antarctic, Sugden - best overview of everything, and easy to understand, but not detailed
Other good overviews:
Thermodynamics of Atmospheres and Oceans, Curry and Webster - Good, short sections on sea ice in chapter 10, and sections 5.6,5.7, sections 11.5-11.6 good for deep water formation Descriptive Regional Oceanography, Tchernia - dated but most thorough overview of oceanography The climate of the Arctic, Przyblak - general meteorology and climate of the arctic Antarctic Meteorology and Climatology, King and Turner - a little technical
Others available in Nimitz: Polar Lows, Rasmussen and Turner Polar Oceanography, Smith (Ed.) Sea Ice, and Introduction to its Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Geology, Thomas and Dieckmann (Eds.)
