Commander Trainor is the Permanent Military Professor of
Leadership in the Department of Leadership, Ethics and
Law of the U.S. Naval Academy. He is responsible for
the development, management and execution of the core
leadership courses taught to all midshipmen during their
four years in residence at the Naval Academy. Commander
Trainor, a native of Herkimer, NY, is a designated Naval
Aviator with more than 2500 flight hours in numerous
operational helicopter commands and aboard multiple
ships of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. During his shore
assignments, he served as the Naval Aide to the Vice
Chief of Naval Operations and to the Commander in Chief,
U.S. Atlantic Command. He also served as Operations
Officer for Commander, Helicopter Anti-Submarine Light
Wing U.S. Pacific Fleet and as Deputy Assistant to the
Chief of Naval Operations for Flag Officer Management
and Distribution. In 1999, Commander Trainor was
selected for operational aviation command and as the
Navy’s first Permanent Military Professor of
Leadership. Commander Trainor is a 1983 graduate of the
Naval Academy and holds masters degrees from Tufts
University and the U.S. Army War College and obtained
his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Maryland.

Midshipman Attitude Survey (USNA, Institutional Research
2003-2004): an ongoing study of the attitudes
and opinions of Naval Academy Midshipmen on a
variety of social and military issues. Studying
the relationship between identity development,
job values and military career plans.
Monitoring the Future Project (UMICH, Inter-University Consortium
for Political and Social Research 1975-2005): an
ongoing study of the behaviors, attitudes, and
values of American secondary school students,
college students, and young adults. Studying
the relationship between race, gender, and
propensity to enlist in the military and
attitudes and perceptions of the equal
opportunity environment of the military.
