Naval Academy Prepares Students for Smart Spring Break

The Naval Academy will host an Alcohol Awareness Conference March 3-4 in Luce Hall.

The event, which kicks off Alcohol Awareness Week, is designed to educate students from the academy and other universities about the dangers of alcohol abuse prior to spring break.

Students and presenters from 14 institutions including Norwich University and Alcoholics Annonymous, will attend the conference, which is being organized by Lt. Andrew Martin, the Naval Academy.s alcohol and drug education officer.

Conference Schedule of Events

Saturday, March 3
9-10:15 a.m. Naval Academy Commandant Capt. Robert Clark’s opening remarks
9:30-10:30 a.m. General session addressing alcohol issues in the military college environment with Q&A (Lt. Martin)
10:45-11:30 a.m. Alcohol and sexual assault (Cmdr. Acheson, USNA Sexual Assault Response Coordinator)
11:30-1 p.m. Lunch (King Hall for students, Dahlgren Hall for others)
1-1:45 p.m. Cooperative programs to support responsible alcohol use with AA speaker Larry O’Connor and counseling focus (Steve Delucchi)
2-2:45 p.m. Open Discussion or breakouts: Staff facilitated by Lt. Martin and students facilitated by Midshipman 1st Class Christopher Moreno, brigade alcohol and drug education officer
3-3:45 p.m. 21st Birthday Dinner Program Overview (DOD police
4-5 p.m. Presentations from institutions (Norwich University)
5 p.m. Daily closing remarks (LT Martin)
Sunday, March 4

All sessions will have Naval Academy midshipmen serving as recorders to consolidate information for all attendees after the conference has concluded.
