ANNAPOLIS, Md. - U.S. Naval Academy Midshipman 1st Class (senior) Natalie Logan has been selected as a Mentor of the Year by the Volunteer Center for Anne Arundel County (Md.). Logan will be honored at the 2011 Mentoring Awards ceremony to be held Jan. 26 in Annapolis, Md.
Logan, 22, is from Colorado Springs, Colo. and is majoring in chemistry. She will be commissioned as an ensign in the Navy upon graduation from the Naval Academy May 27, 2011 and will serve as a Surface Warfare Officer.
Logan is being honored for leading a group of midshipmen female mentors in volunteering with the S.M.A.R.T Girls program (Skills, Mastery and Resistance Training) of the Boys and Girls Club of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County. She also responded to a call to action last year by Anne Arundel County Public Schools to tutor approximately 40 local high school students in danger of failing their High School Assessment exams. As president of the Benjamin Banneker Math and Science Honor Society during the spring 2010 semester, Logan organized her fellow midshipmen to help with the tutoring. As a result, over 30 of the high school students passed their exam. Logan currently serves as president of the Midshipmen Black Studies Club and is working with local public schools administrators to meet a need for a local Quiz Bowl for Black History Month.
Said Logan, “I would like to thank the Volunteer Center of Anne Arundel County for this honor. I volunteer because I have a passion for helping others especially young people. I benefited from the kindness and mentorship of many people which allowed me to become who I am today. I want to be that for someone else.”
