NAVAL ACADEMY PROFESSOR RECIEVES NAVAL RESEARCH AWARD

#038-12 March 30, 2012

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Dr. Carolyn Judge of the U.S. Naval Academy’s Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering department has been selected one of 26 winners of the 27th annual Young Investigator Program awarded by U.S. Navy’s Office of Naval Research.

The winners of the award represent 19 academic institutions across the country and have attained tenure-track positioning in the last five years. They have been selected based upon the merit of their research and potential contributions toward advances for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.

Judge, of Bethesda, Md., has been teaching at the Naval Academy since 2003 and was awarded tenure track in 2010. She teaches third class (sophomore) midshipmen majoring in naval architecture courses in the principles of naval architecture and hydrostatistics and stability.

Judge’s research will concentrate on hydrodynamics involved with wave slams on rigid bodies moving at high speeds. Her research is a first step toward predicting the hydrodynamic loads on high-speed planing craft. Further information may be found in the eTrident.

The Young Investigator Program is one of the oldest and most selective scientific research advancement programs in the nation. Its purpose is to fund early-career academic researchers whose scientific pursuits show exceptional promise for supporting the Navy and Marine Corps while also promoting their professional development. Of the 350 candidates this year, the 26 selected will receive annual monetary awards over a three-year period for research efforts that hold promise in advancing naval technology.
