ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The United States Naval Academy will hold the annual Special Olympics Maryland competition April 21 - 22. The two-day event is a collaboration between the Midshipmen Action Group, the Annapolis Jaycees and local volunteers.
The first day of competition is devoted to aquatics while the second day is devoted to track and field events. Special Olympians, who earn qualifying times, will go on to the next level of competition at other venues statewide.
Established in 1992 as a community relations program organized and maintained by the Brigade of Midshipmen, the Midshipmen Action Group offers a variety of educational, environmental and social service volunteer projects. Coordinated with community partners from the Annapolis, Baltimore and Washington D.C. areas, as well as regional and national partners, last year, MAG participated in approximately 20,000 hours of community service with over 3,300 volunteer hours dedicated to this weekend-long Special Olympics event alone. MAG prepares midshipmen for future service by encouraging peer leadership, teamwork, character development, morale, selflessness and goodwill towards others.
