NAVAL ACADEMY PARTICIPATES IN SECOND ANNUAL SEPT. 11TH COMMEMORATIVE DAY OF SERVICE
| #063-11 | Aug 29, 2011 |
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Approximately 50-100 Naval Academy midshipmen, friends, and families in conjunction with the Volunteer Center for Anne Arundel County will participate in the second annual Sept. 11th Commemorative Day of Service, also known as Project Green: 9/11 Day of Service. This event remembers the 10th anniversary of the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 by providing a chance for the community to give back and clean up the shoreline.
Midshipmen from the Naval Academy's Midshipmen Action Group (MAG) and the Volunteer Center for Anne Arundel County will be working as part of the Coastal Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup, the world's largest volunteer event of its kind. This event includes nearly nine million volunteers from 152 countries and locations who clean 145 million pounds of trash from the shores of lakes, streams, rivers, and the ocean on just one day each year.
The Annapolis event takes place on Sept. 11, 2011 at Jonas Green Park in Annapolis from 8:30 a.m. until noon. It begins with a commemorative ceremony at 8:30 a.m. at the Maryland World War II monument on Ritchie Highway overlooking Jonas Green Park. The opening ceremony will include singing of the national anthem as well as speakers from the Naval Academy and the Annapolis community. Possible project tasks include: planting, weeding, beach cleanup, and additional park beautification.
