NAVAL ACADEMY MIDSHIPMAN NAMED MARSHALL SCHOLAR

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Naval Academy is proud to announce that Midshipman 1st Class (senior) Ian M. Cameron, has been awarded a Marshall Scholarship. This highly competitive academic scholarship provides two years of postgraduate study at a United Kingdom university.

Cameron, from Rochester, Minn., majors in Arabic and will pursue a Master of Philosophy in Middle Eastern Studies at St. Anthony's College at University of Oxford, England. He witnessed first-hand the Egyptian revolution in January 2011 while studying at American University in Cairo as part of the academy's Semester Study Abroad program. He finished the semester at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco.

Cameron serves as the president of the Class of 2012; Midshipman Middle Eastern Studies Association President; Arabic Club President; 25th Co Physical Mission Officer; is a member of the Marathon Team and the Men's Glee Club. Upon graduation, he plans to commission as a Marine second lieutenant.

Midshipman Cameron has made the most of that experience by taking great advantage of the many academic and leadership opportunities at the Naval Academy, and we could not be more proud of him." said Dr. Andrew Phillips, Naval Academy academic dean and provost.

Marshall Scholarships were founded by an Act of Parliament in 1953 and commemorate the humane ideals of the European Recovery Program (Marshall Plan). Goals of the program include enabling future leaders of America the opportunity to study in the UK, to help scholars gain an understanding and appreciation of contemporary Britain, to contribute to the advancement of knowledge at Britain.s centers of academic excellence and to motivate scholars to act as ambassadors throughout their lives thus strengthening British-American understanding. Approximately 40 Marshall Scholars are selected each year.


USNA

Founded in 1845, the Naval Academy produces leaders to serve the nation. USNA is a four-year service academy that prepares midshipmen morally, mentally and physically for a career of leadership in the naval service. The student body is made up of approximately 4,400 men and women representing every state in the U.S. and several foreign countries. Midshipmen are taught by a 560-member faculty comprised of an integrated group of military and civilian instructors in approximately equal numbers. The student-faculty ratio is 8:1, with most class sizes ranging from 10 to 22 students.

The Naval Academy has been recognized by U.S. News and World Reports as a top 10 undergraduate engineering school and a top 15 best liberal arts college. In addition to a nationally recognized academic program, midshipmen experience an intense, four-year leadership and military education. Upon graduation they are commissioned as ensigns in the U.S. Navy or second lieutenants in the U.S. Marine Corps.
