NOTE TO EDITORS AND REPORTERS:  If you are interested in covering any events during Commissioning Week, please contact the Public Affairs Office at 410-293-2292, or e-mail: mediarelations@usna.edu by noon, May 20.

ANNAPOLIS, Md.— For the convenience of family, friends and visitors during the traditional Herndon Climb, May 20, and Commissioning Week, May 20-24, the Naval Academy will provide free, daily shuttle buses; a dedicated phone number for schedule of events information; weather-related updates; as well as television broadcast and webcasting of the graduation and commissioning ceremony.

PLEASE NOTE: With the exception of certified assistance animals, pets are not permitted on academy grounds during the Herndon Monument Climb and Commissioning Week, May 20-24. Picnicking is also prohibited on academy grounds.

Parking – Parking at Navy–Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Taylor Avenue is strongly advised due to anticipated congestion downtown and limited parking at USNA.  The daily fee is $5 per car and $10 per recreational vehicle. Vehicles without Department of Defense decals are not permitted aboard the academy.  Cars with handicapped tags or dashboard placards must be issued a pass from the Visitor Access Center at Gate 1 (King George Street) during normal business hours.  After hours, a pass may be issued at Gate 1 or Gate 8 (Maryland Route 450).

Shuttle Buses - Free shuttle buses will run roundtrip from the stadium to the academy, approximately every 30 minutes on the following schedule*:

  • Monday, May 20 – 7 a.m.-11 p.m.
  • Tuesday, May 21 - 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Wednesday, May 22 – 7 a.m.–midnight
  • Thursday, May 23 - 7 a.m.–11 p.m.

The red route only stops at Alumni Hall; the purple route stops at Preble Hall, Dahlgren Hall, the Visitor Center, Alumni Hall and the Midshipman Store parking lot.

*In support of the Herndon Climb (Monday, May 20), the only drop-off and pick-up point for both shuttle bus routes will be in front of Alumni Hall from noon until the conclusion of the event.

During peak periods, please anticipate lines for the shuttle service and probable delays due to heavy traffic congestion in and around downtown Annapolis.

Shuttle buses will not operate on graduation day Friday, May 24, unless weather dictates that the ceremony be moved into Alumni Hall.  If that occurs, parking will be at the stadium and buses will run for indoor graduation ticket holders, 1st Class Midshipmen and USNA faculty and staff only. Shuttles will begin at 6 a.m. and continue until all authorized personnel have been transported to Alumni Hall.  Upon conclusion of the ceremony, buses will run until 2 p.m. between the stadium and Alumni Hall.

These schedules may change; call the USNA activities phone line at 410-293-1000 or visit the website at  http://www.usna.edu/CommissioningWeek/index.php for the most up-to-date information.
