5 ON 5 BASKETBALL - Intramurals

Rules:

1. Intramural basketball is used as a means of developing many characteristics which are desired in the mental and physical qualifications of all midshipmen. The game offers exceptional opportunities to develop individual excellence, in addition to becoming an important cog in team play.

2. Competition. Competition will be held during the Fall season between companies in designated leagues by regiments.

3. Team. Each team will consist of five midshipmen .

4. Squad. Each squad will consist of a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 15 midshipmen. Everyone who signs up and their name appears on the company roster must show up for every competition scheduled. Rosters will be checked for attendance. All who attend must play in the game at one time or another.

5. Rules. Intercollegiate rules will govern all competition with the following exceptions:

a. There are four (4) quarters with actual playing time of 8 minutes for each quarter. In case of a tie score at the end of a regular game, an extra period of 3 minutes will be played. If a tie exists at the end of the extra period, play will be continued on a "sudden death" basis. The team scoring the first 2 points will be the winner. There will be no 45 second clock in effect.

b. During the first half of each scheduled game, a player will be eligible to participate in only one period. A team having a minimum of ten players present, in order to comply with the rules regarding participation during the first half, may play only five players in the first period. In the event that there is an injury, the supervisor in charge will rule on whether or not the injury will prevent the player from further play during the game. If the supervisor in charge rules that the injured player cannot further participate in the game, then the rule regarding participation will be waived. Any squad member present who did not participate in the first half must do so during the second half. All members who participated in the first or second period will be eligible to compete in the second half.

c. Any team lacking a sufficient number of players to comply with the rules regarding participation during the second period as shown by the official muster list on that day may, after utilizing all substitutes, complete the team with players who participated during the first period.

d. The bonus free throw rule (one and one) goes into effect with the team's fifth personal foul in each half.

e. Time between quarters and overtime periods will be one minute. Half-time and time between the end of the fourth quarter and the first overtime period will be one minute.

f. The first game of all doubleheaders will end at 1700 regardless of score, time to play, or other conditions. The second game of all doubleheaders will start no later than 1710 and terminate at 1810 regardless of score or time to play. If the ball is in flight during a try for field goal, the game ends when the try ends, or if a foul occurs so near the expiration of time that the penalty shots cannot be attempted, or if the foul occurs after time expires, but when the ball is in flight during a try for field goal the game will be extended until the free throw or throws and all related activity have been completed.

g. Ties in games terminated by time will be recorded as ties.

h. Neither team is allowed to request time out after 1658 (first game), or 1808 (second game). The officials may suspend play at any time as required.

6. Referees. Midshipmen will be used to officiate each contest. There will be two officials per game. If no (0) officials show up, your game WILL NOT be played. The officiating team will be penalized (-15 points) and a reschedule will try to be made. This is a new rule. The referees are to be in the appropriate striped shirts and use the whistles. Players are not to argue with the officials.

7. Fouls. (Things that are fouls)

a. Hand checking or tagging is a foul! Call it!

b. Undue roughness is a Technical Foul. More than one on the same player and they are immediately banned from playing any more in that game.

c. Excessive number of intentional fouls to stop the clock is a Technical Foul. The referee may forfeit a game if unnecessary roughness continues after a warning.

d. Grabbing a player's arm or body w/o attempting to gain control of the ball is a Technical Foul.

e. Coaches of each team are responsible for controlling their teams. Unnecessary profanity or physical roughness will not be tolerated.

8. Who is not eligible to play Intramural 5/5 Basketball:

a. Any varsity/club sport athlete currently in-season/out-of-season and are on a roster for that sport.

b. A Navy JV/varsity basketball player. They must not have participated in

JV/varsity for a year before they can play intramural basketball.

c. If these Midn play and are caught, coaches should turn in a formal protest and that team with the ineligible player will then forfeit.

9. Mouth guards are mandatory or your team will forfeit. Refs are to do a check for Mouth guards.
