SAILING - Intramurals

Sailing at the Naval Academy teaches seamanship, self-reliance, and respect for the wind and water.  It exposes us to living with shipmates in close quarters and provides the associated leadership challenges in the presence of adversity and risk.

Sailing’s unique heritage at the Naval Academy serves to remind us of the master mariners whose reputation as naval officers depended principally on their ability to handle a sailing vessel.  As a naval officer, you will be expected to know the rudiments of sailing.

  1. Competition:  Competition among each battalion will constitute a six to twelve-team league with up to two teams from each battalion.
  1. Team Each team shall field 4 midshipmen.  Four sailors are required to start and finish a race.  Teams assigned a penalty will be penalized the number of boats in the race plus 1 point for each infraction.
  1. Participation  Every midshipman on the battalion roster will sail at least one race.
  1. Squad  Each battalion squad shall consist of a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 12 midshipmen.  Squad members who did not sail in the first race must do so during the second race.  All midshipmen on the roster must attend all races that their battalion is assigned, unless on a chit or excusal list.  Absences will be considered UA from a military obligation.
  1. Race Committee There will be two members of the committee to officiate each race.
  1. PFD’s (Life Jackets) are MANDATORY. Individuals not wearing a PFD will be grounds for disqualifying that team from the race.
