STREET HOCKEY - Intramurals

Rules:
Season: Winter; (snow
and or ice will cancel games.)
Team: Minimum roster
is eight (8) and maximum is ten (10). Each team will consist of five (5)
players.
Eligibility: No
varsity in season or out of season athletes can play. No club sport "in
season" athletes can play. No Club Hockey players can play.
Participation: Every
team member must play in one-half of the scheduled time of each recorded
contest. All midshipmen on the roster must attend every scheduled contest,
unless on a medical chit or excusal list. Absence will be considered UA
from a military obligation.
Equipment: 2/c
Managers will sign out: Hockey Sticks with plastic blades, no bounce
pucks, eye guards, and goalie helmets and pads. MOUTH GUARDS AND EYE
GUARDS ARE MANDATORY. FORFEIT WILL RESULT IN ANY PLAYER NOT WEARING OR
REFUSING TO WEAR THESE ITEMS. Players may wear gloves if desired. GOALIES
MUST WEAR HELMETS AND FULL FACE MASKS. IF A GOALKEEPERS' HELMET OR FACE
MASK FALLS OFF, PLAY MUST STOP IMMEDIATELY.
Play Area: 7th Wing
Tennis Courts (7 hockey area)
The Game: played on
a reasonably flat surface free of debris and obstacles. The surface will
be outdoors. The game is played between two teams of four players and one
goalie. The object of the game is to advance the puck down the court past
the opponent's goalkeeper and into the net. The team with the most goals
at the end of the allotted time period is declared the winner.
Weather: Play will
be stopped immediately in the event of inclement weather (snow, rain, ice,
lightning or any other hazardous weather conditions)
Officials: There
will be two officials per game. Striped jersey and whistle are mandatory.
If (0) no officials show up, the game will not be played, and the company
who was to officiate will receive -15 points and be considered UA from a
military obligation. The playing teams will not be penalized, but will
attempt to make it up or it will go down as a tie.
Rules and Description:
1. Each team consists of
five players.
2. The match will consist
of two fifteen minute periods, running time. (A 3 minute half time).
3. Games will be played on
a standard tennis court, where lines put down specifically for Hockey. (On
the outdoor basketball courts, the boundary line is the basketball court
line, on the tennis court it is continuous play except when it goes into
another court of play.)
4. Time outs will only be
called at the discretion of the referee.
5. Play is continuous; off
sides and icing violations will not be called.
6. The stick blade will not
be raised above the waist. Infractions are a minor penalty.
7. Body checking/contact is
not allowed. This is a major penalty.
8. Players called for
infractions will move directly to the penalty box. The penalty box shall
be an area directly across from the team benches, next to the timer.
9. Face-offs will be
conducted at the beginning of each period and after each goal is scored.
10 .A ball shot out of the
area of play will be passed in by the team that did not touch the ball
last. A three (3) foot free area will be allowed for an inbound pass.
11. A goal is scored when
one of the following occurs:
a. the ball is shot into
the net and crosses the goal line
b. the ball is deflected
off any player on the court and enters the net by crossing the goal
line.
c. balls that are
directed into the goal by the glove hand or kicked in will not count.
12. The goal crease is a
goalkeepers' privileged area, no opposing player is allowed in the crease
without the puck. The goal will be disallowed if an attacking player is in
the Goal crease area before the puck enters the net.
13. Choice of goals: the
home team shall select which goal they will defend at the start of the
game. A toss of the coin by the referee will decide the home team.
14. Beginning Play: Face
off at center court, and repeated at start of second half.
a. Players must face each
others end of the court
b. Players must be one
stick length apart with the blades of the sticks touching the surface of
the rink.
c. No players may come
within a 10 foot radius of players facing off
d. All players must be on
side during all face-offs.
15. Puck must be kept in
motion. NO holding of the puck with stick, feet, body, fences, walls in
such a manner as to cause stoppage of play.
16. Play shall not stop if
the puck strikes an official anywhere within the field of play.
17. If the game is tied at
the end of regulation play, the game will remain tied during regular
season play. In playoffs, an extra 5 minutes will be played to decide
game. In playoffs, if remain tied after 5 minute overtime, a shoot out
will occur. This will have four players from each team allowed one
opportunity to score. The team with the most goals scored during the shoot
out, shall be declared the winner.
18. A player or goalkeeper
whose stick has been broken must drop the stick immediately. A minor
penalty shall be assessed for an infraction of this rule. The player will
go to the bench and receive a new stick. No throwing of sticks onto the
court, a penalty will be assessed if this happens. Take broken sticks to
gear issue in Macdonough to be surveyed.
19. Interference: It is a
violation to interfere with or impede the progress of any opponent who is
not in possession of the puck. Accidental or incidental body contact will
be permitted, but will be to the officials discretion.
20. Kicking the Puck:
Kicking the puck with a foot shall be permitted in all zones. However, a
puck kicked into the goal or deflected off a player, shall not be counted
as a goal.
21. NO PLAYER MAY LEAVE THE
PLAYER'S BENCH OR PENALTY BOX TO PARTICIPATE IN AN ON SURFACE ALTERCATION.
ANY VIOLATION OF THIS RULE WILL RESULT IN EJECTION FROM THE GAME AND THE
INTRAMURAL OFFICE NOTIFIED OF THIS INFRACTION.
22. Clearing: the puck may
not be shot or passed from the defensive zone to the opposite end of the
rink and across the goal line, without having the puck touched by a
player. The opposing team will then get a free pass in.
23. Players must wear
opposing colors, blue, gold or white.
24. Substitution: Players
may substitute at any time from the player's bench. Exiting players must
not interfere with play while leaving the playing surface.
Penalties:
Minor Penalties:
1. For a minor penalty the
offending player shall be removed from play for one minute(running time)
from the time the puck is dropped to restart play. His team will play with
one less player.
2. For a major penalty the
offending player shall be removed from play for three minutes (running
time) from the time the puck is dropped to restart play. His team will
play with one less player.
3. If the same player
receives two major penalties in the same game, he will be suspended from
the remainder of the game. The team will play with one less player the
rest of the game.
4. If a player receives a
major and minor penalty, the major penalty shall be served first.
5. If two players on the
same team receive penalties, one minor and one major, the major penalty
shall be served first, followed by the major.
6. Minor and major
penalties shall be imposed for the following infractions (severity of the
penalty shall be left to the referee's discretion)
A. Poor Conduct
1. Challenging of disputing the decision of the referee
2. Creating a disturbance
3. Shooting the puck after the whistle has blown
4. Delaying the game by deliberately shooting or throwing the puck out
of the area.
5. Deliberately displacing the goal net
6. Using obscene or abusive language
7. Interfering in any way with the game official
8. Interference of play from the bench
9. Making physical contact with an opponent after the whistle has blown
10. Abuse of officials (verbal or physical)
11. Failure to heed the decision of an official after a penalty has been
called
12. Throwing anything into the playing area
B. Excessive Violence
1. Deliberate body checking
2. Jumping, kicking or charging an opponent
3. Cross-Checking
4. Unnecessary roughness
5. Use of forearms or hands to check an opponent above the opponent's
shoulder.
C. Injury or attempt to
injure
1. Slashing or attempts to slash
2. Butt-ending or attempts to butt-end
D. Altercation (Fighting,
Wrestling)
1. Physical retaliation against an opposing player
E. Obstructions
1. Elbowing or kneeing
2. Holding an opponent or his stick in a manner that impedes him from
playing
3. Tripping
4. Defending plainer smothering the puck(except goalie)
5. Goalkeeper smothering the puck outside of the crease.
6. Impeding the progress of an opponent who does not have control of the
puck, knocking his stick from the hands, or preventing him from
retrieving it.
F. Technical Violation
1. Use of a stick not conforming to the rules
2. Leaving the penalty box prior to expiration of the penalty
3. Throwing a stick in the direction of the puck
G. Delaying the Game
1. Failure to maintain proper face-off position
2. Deliberately holding the puck against the surface structure
3. Exceeding their maximum number of players in play
4. Excessive clearing (referee's decision)
THE FOLLOWING INFRACTIONS
WILL RESULT IN SUSPENSION FROM GAME:
1. INJURING AN OPPONENT BY CROSS CHECKING OR HOOKING
2. INJURING AN OPPONENT BY DELIBERATE USE OF THE KNEE OR ELBOW
3. GRABBING OR HOLDING ANY PLAYER AROUND THE HEAD OR NECK
4. INJURING AN OPPONENT BY SLASHING 5. DELIBERATE INTENT TO INJURE AN
OPPONENT
ZERO TOLERANCE RULE IF ANY
OFFICIAL HEARS EITHER A PLAYER ON THE SURFACE OR A TEAM MEMBER ON THE
BENCH USE PROFANE LANGUAGE, A 2 MINUTE BENCH PENALTY WILL BE ASSESSED, AND
AN ON SURFACE PLAYER WILL SERVE THE PENALTY AND THE TEAM WILL PLAY ONE
PLAYER SHORT FOR DURATION OF THE PENALTY. IF THE OFFENDING LANGUAGE
CONTINUES, THE REFEREE MAY DEFAULT THE GAME AND AWARD THE POINTS TO THE
OPPOSING TEAM.
GOALIES: Will wear shine
pads, chest protector, helmet with long cage face mask, throat protector
(Baseball or lacrosse gloves are optional)
SPECIAL SAFETY
REQUIREMENTS:
1. NO BADLY WORN OR JAGGED EDGE STICKS WILL BE USED.
2. NO STICKS ABOVE THE WAIST.
3. NO PLAYERS IN THE GOALIE CREASE.
4. ALL PLAYERS WILL WEAR EYE GUARDS.
