Professional Programs Department
The Professional Programs Department is the Naval Academy's center for midshipmen career
development and assignment. It is responsible for the Summer Training, Career Information,
and Service Assignment programs.
Summer training enhances midshipmen development for the privilege of serving as leaders of
Sailors and Marines who volunteered to serve their country. Each summer, midshipmen spend
a four-week period immersed in the Fleet, maximizing exposure to Navy and Marine Corps
personnel, operations, and training. This training enhances their professional skills sets
and enables them to make well-informed decisions regarding Service Assignment preferences.
In addition, all midshipmen complete a four-week summer professional development event, such
as Naval Academy instructional detail, language studies and cultural immersion opportunities
abroad, local small craft training, foreign navy cruises, or academic summer school.
The Career Information program educates midshipmen about future Navy and Marine Corps career
options. It is an integrated four-year plan, comprised of briefings, social events,
professional forums, and daily midshipmen interaction with military staff and faculty. The
culmination of the program is the Service Assignment process which matches midshipman
qualifications, aptitude, and desires with Navy and Marine Corps officer manning requirements.
The process produces the best qualified officers ready to lead Sailors and Marines.
