STEM Activities

The Naval Academy hosts a number of activities that involve STEM.
They include:

STEM Camp

Science and Engineering Faculty Members and the Admissions Office host this success oriented, project-based curriculum for students in grades 7,8,9 and 10.

Camps are held each June and are one week in duration. Three camp sessions are scheduled with about 100 students per session. This is an overnight camp, with students staying in Bancroft Hall.

The 2012 Camp Theme was "Extreme Technology: Annapolis Edition".  Campers from diverse backgrounds and from around the country participated in a wide range of activities, including optimizing hull design, building circuits, visiting the biometrics lab, cryptography, 3D simulation, storm chasing, physics of light, and much more.

Girls Exploring Technology through Innovative Topics

A program developed by female engineering faculty at USNA to encourage Middle School girls to consider engineering as a career. Program includes short courses, school visits, mentoring and summer camp.

The week-long day camp included design challenges and competition, team building, hands-on activities, tours of labs and research areas, and networking with professional female engineers.

Mini-STEMs

High schools are invited to send small groups of students to visit USNA for an overnight visit or a long weekend.

The students get a tour of the technical majors and spend time engaged in interactive engineering activities, such as experiments in the wind tunnel, learning to use the electron microscope to look at nano-particles, or programming robots. Mini-STEMs might even include a ride on the Oceanography Yard Patrol Craft (YP) to do some experiments on the Chesapeake Bay!

Advanced Co-Curricular Programs

This program is geared towards local Middle School Students.

The Advanced Study Program is sponsored and funded by the Anne Arundel County Board of Education's Advanced Co-curricular Advanced Programs Office. The program consists of advanced studies in mathematics computer applications, engineering, and the sciences for grades six through twelve.

Fall and Spring sessions are held during the school year, and are open to public school students only. Over a two week period, 4-5 sessions are held in the evenings at USNA with a focus on project-based learning. Engineering courses have included Underwater Search with SeaPerch, Build your Own, and Simple Machines/Complex Robots.

SeaPerch Program

The showcase is held in May in collaboration with the Office of Naval Research, Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, and Anne Arundel County Public Schools.

As part of after school clubs, students build SeaPerch remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to launch in the USNA Hydro Lab tow tanks. Students, parents, and teachers rotate through hands-on activities in the USNA laboratories and onboard the Oceanography Yard Patrol Craft to augment the science and technology lessons learned during the kit building process.
