The USNA STEM Office and the Office of Admissions have hosted a Summer STEM Program for middle and high school students each year since 2008. Many past participants have now reached college-age, and some of them have gone on to enroll at the Naval Academy. There are currently 52 alumni of the Summer STEM program in the brigade of midshipmen.
On Oct 1, 2013, the USNA STEM Office hosted a reunion for all current midshipmen who are alumni of the Summer STEM Program. A luncheon was held at the Naval Academy Club. 24 midshipmen were in attendance, along with representatives from the Office of Admissions and the STEM Office.
The guest speaker at the luncheon was CDR Tim Smith, USN, Director of the National/Naval Ice Center in Suitland, MD. Dr. Pablo Clemente Colon, Chief Scientist at the National/Naval Ice Center was also a special guest. CDR Smith gave a personal and motivating account of his Naval Career. He stressed the value of his scientific background to his job as a naval officer, highlighting the benefit of developing analytical and technical skills through a STEM education.
All those present at the luncheon enjoyed the opportunity to mingle, as midshipmen recalled their past experiences at Summer STEM. Many midshipmen in attendance noted that the Summer STEM Program was their first introduction to the Naval Academy, and sparked their interest in applying to the school.
