Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Robert Crown Center?

The sailing program at the Naval Academy is headquartered in the Robert Crown Center which was dedicated in the spring of 1974 and named in honor of the late Captain Robert Crown.  Click here for more.

How do I become an OIC for a training/racing cruise?

You must go through a qualification and certification process.  Click here for details.

What does earning a D-qual allow me to do?

Naval Academy polices and procedures require that an Officer in Charge be aboard whenever a boat is underway for training, practice, CBYRA and intercollegiate big boat races, summer cruise blocks, etc. with one exception - D qualified individuals are allowed to recreationally sail boats on a not-to-interfere basis with midshipman training.  This exception is allowed because recreation sailing is authorized:

    a.  Only in the clearly defined local operating area (Local OPAREA)

    b.  Only during daylight hours and on fair weather days.

This opportunity is afforded to allow midshipmen to gain additional on the water training.  The Deputy Director, Naval Academy Sailing (DDNAS) signs every chit for the Director, and the Cutter Shed Watch has clearly defined parameters that are promulgated and also require that they call the DDNAS - or they can secure the recreation sail if they determine conditions are or will become adverse.

A “D” qual does not an OIC make.

What is the history of NASS?

NASS has existed since 1949 to train midshipmen in seamanship while sailing or racing on the Chesapeake & Atlantic Ocean.  Click here for more.

Where do I go as a NASS member to buy NASS logo clothing/gear?

The Naval Academy gift shop operates a chandlery selling NASS items to members via phone or the web.  Click here for full details.

What boats do the you sail on the Navy Dinghy Team?

Dinghy regattas are sailed in the Naval Academy 420's, FJ's and Lasers. Optimum skipper/crew weight in a 420 is around 270 lbs in winds up to 12 kts. In stronger winds we look for heavy air crews to bring the weight closer to 320 lbs.  In FJ's the optimum weight is 260 lbs and 300 lbs in heavy air.  Intercollegiate Laser races are usually short and in protected water. Sailors can weigh as little as 150 lbs and still be competitive. Women single-handed sailing is done in Laser Radial rigs.

How do I get on the Academy with the current security restrictions?

Visiting teams will be permitted to drive onto the Academy grounds for practice and regattas.  However, in order to do so, you MUST fill out the Gate Pass List by the Tuesday prior to your event.  Otherwise you will need to park outside the Academy and walk in.  In ALL cases, each person MUST show a current picture ID and should have it at hand when entering the Gate.  Click on Forms & Passes on the left.
