Kennedy Cup
|
The John F.
Kennedy Memorial Regatta is the first truly national intercollegiate sailing
competition to held in large yachts. It is patterned after the traditional
McMillan Cup Regatta which John F. Kennedy won sailing for Harvard in 1938.
It is an intersectional event with representatives from each of the ICYRA
districts invited. In 1965, the U.S. Naval Academy received permission
from the Kennedy family to name the regatta in honor of the late President.

The 1965 Kennedy Cup marked
the transition from the Naval Academy's original wooden Luders yawls to
the new fiberglass yachts of the same design. The 1991 Kennedy Cup Regatta
was the first sailed in the new Navy 44 foot sloops, marking yet another
transition for Navy Sailing. Fittingly, President Kennedy's alma mater,
Harvard University, won the first Kennedy Cup Regatta. The late President's
brother, Senator Edward Kennedy, and sister, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, were
on hand to present the trophy to Edward Butler, skipper of the Harvard
boat. Nineteen different colleges have won the trophy since its inception. |
Since 1994,
the winning team has received the U.S. invitation to participate in the
Student Yachting World Cup, an international university big boat championship
held in France.
