Navy 44 Regattas

McMillan Cup

McMillan Cup

The McMillan Cup Regatta is the oldest collegiate sailing event in the United States. The McMillan Cup was established in 1930 after its predecessor, the Oliver Hay Trophy, was retired by Princeton University after winning it three times consecutively. To maintain the competition, Mr. William McMillan of Baltimore, MD, a Princeton alumnus, donated the handsome sterling silver trophy which has since signified the intercollegiate big boat championship amongst New England and Mid-Atlantic schools.

Up to 1950, the regattas were held at various sailing centers and yacht clubs in New England. After World War II, it became apparent that the competing colleges would have difficulty in obtaining sufficient boats to carry on the McMillan Cup and in 1950 the Naval Academy offered their 44' Luders yawls for Intercollegiate (ICYRA) competition. Since that time, the regatta has been hosted by the Naval Academy.
