The J-24 team is part of the Varsity Offshore Sailing Team (VOST).   Younger members of VOST learn how to race and work together as a team on the Naval Academy's fleet of twelve J-24's, after which they move up to compete on the big boats.  Typically in the fall, each boat is made up of a 3/c skipper who trains three 4/c crew.  The 3/c skippers are selected from the previous year's 4/c and receive an excellent opportunity to work on their own helmsmanship, tactics, teaching and especially leadership skills, which then carry over into leadership positions in their 2/c and 1/c years on the big boats.  During the spring season, the 3/c move up to the big boats.  The 4/c then sail with new crews each week and rotate through each position on the boat.  Team members gain hands-on experience as helmsman,  trimmer, middle balance and foredeck in both racing and non-racing situations.
