Course Descriptions

THE PADI BASIC OPEN WATER COURSE :

Annapolis SCUBA Center is a PADI 5-Star facility which offers several scheduling options for the Open Water Diver Course. With the use of the home-study course materials, we're sure that you will find one of these options convenient! Dynamic course materials make learning fun and easy!

Your open water course begins with an orientation session, at which time students will review what will be covered in their course, meet their instructor, and complete registration paperwork.

Following this session, you'll participate in four knowledge review sessions which take place here at USNA, MacDonough Hall classroom as well as four diving sessions at the swimming pool.

Following your academic and pool diving sessions, you'll complete four open water training dives. You'll complete them at Bainbridge quarry in PA. Should you want to complete them on a trip, you'll receive a referral letter to take with you so that you can complete your open water training on your vacation. We'll link you with a PADI Dive Center wherever your destination may be.

Your instructor will help you select the equipment that will best meet your diving needs, and offer you the most comfort in order to enjoy the underwater world! Each student will need their own mask, fins, snorkel, weight belt, and weights. Annapolis SCUBA Center will provide BCD, tank, and regulator for your confined water training sessions. The instructor will bring gear selections to your orientation brief to give you some idea of what is offered. If you desire, you may order your gear the night of the orientation.

Our Open Water Course includes course materials (CD-ROM), pool fees and instruction (academic, pool, and open water training),use of tank, BCD, and regulator for confined water training sessions, and certification fee and photo.

The cost for midshipmen is $215. This includes all books, CD-ROMs, wetsuit rentals and Quarry entrance fees.

THE PADI ADVANCED OPEN WATER COURSE :

This course does not require a written test! Now that we have your attention... This course allows the diver to complete five different dives, and receive specialized training from an instructor on each. These are just a few of the specialty dives you can choose from.

On the NAVIGATION dive you'll improve your competence with a compass both on the surface and underwater. You'll take part in straight-line and pattern navigation exercises, and learn how to use natural navigation to find your way as you dive. This dive will make you more confident in conducting dives without relying on a divemaster.

You will receive some basic deep diver training on the DEEP dive, during which you can experience depth beyond the 60' limit on your Open Water certification. Deep Diving makes it possible to visit wrecks, and observe different types of marine life that aren't found in shallower depths. There are specialized types of equipment often recommended for deep diving, which will be covered in this portion of the Advanced Open Water Course.

These dives, listed above, are core dives in the AOW program. Two additional specialty dives are completed; the following are some of those offered. A PEAK PERFORMANCE BUOYANCY dive, allows you to practice the fine tuning of your buoyancy to make you more comfortable underwater, and your movements more efficient at various depths. The MULTI-LEVEL dive introduces you to the use of the PADI wheel, which enables you to plan dives at multiple depths (thus increasing your bottom time). UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHY is a specialty dive which can be chosen if you have an interest in capturing the splendor of the aquatic world on film. The UNDERWATER NATURALIST dive introduces you the aquatic realm, from an ecological perspective. You'll be introduced to various types of marine life and their habitats, and the affect that man has on the underwater environment.

As an ADVANCED OPEN WATER DIVER, you will be recognized as someone who has received additional training, and truly taken their diving education seriously. It is without a doubt, the most logical step following the Open Water Diver Course.
