Heat Condition Information

Readings

Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) Index Instrument readings are taken every hour on the hour (0700-1900) on training days during the hot weather period. The WBGT combines shade air temperature, radiation, humidity, and wind into a single value to be used as a guide for controlling training. When the shade temp is above 85 degrees, readings will be taken each half-hour.

Heat Stress Conditions

  Alpha Green: 80-84.9°F
Heavy exercises for unacclimatized personnel conducted with caution and under constant supervision. PFT may be conducted.

Bravo Yellow:  85-87.9°F

Strenuous exercises, such as drill or the obstacle course, will be suspended for unacclimatized personnel.  Outdoor classes in the sun will be moved to a shaded area or suspended.

Charlie Red:  88-89.9°F

Thoroughly acclimatized personnel may carry on limited activity not to exceed 6 hours per day. All physical training halted for personnel not thoroughly acclimatized.

Delta Black:  90° F +

All strenuous nonessential outdoor physical activity halted for all units. Essential activities are defined as those activities associated with scheduled exercises or other major training evolutions where the disruption would cause undue burden on personnel or resources, or are excessively expensive.  Essential activity will be conducted at a level commensurate with personnel acclimatization, as determined by the CO, TBS.

    a. A maximum effort should be made to plan ahead when the temperature will be in the red to black flag range. Training exercises should begin as early in the morning as possible during these periods.

    b. Wearing of body armor or NBC protective uniforms in effect adds 10 degrees (F) to the measured WBGT Index. Heat conditions will be adjusted appropriately. Removing body armor or NBC protective equipment is always an option for primary instructors/COs that wish to complete training, except during fragmentation-producing live fire events.

    c. During any of the above flag conditions, personnel participating in field training will have at least two canteens of water immediately available. No restriction will be placed on water intake.
