Obituary from the Newport RI "Mercury," January 3, 1891

Prof. W. F. Marshall died at his residence on Charles Street Tuesday (December 30, 1890) in the 68th year of his age. The deceased was a native of Manchester, England, but had lived in this country almost since boyhood. He was a thorough musician and had been prominently identified with the profession in this city and State. He was director of the Beethoven Society in 1849, and conducted the America Band at the Jennie Lind concert in Providence. He was the leader of the Fourth R. I. Regimental Band during the war, and in 1862 assumed the leadership of the band of the Naval Academy. He was the first instructor of the Newport Band. A widow and one son, Mr. F. W. Marshall, survive him.
