| Prof.
W. F. Marshall died at his residence on Charles Street Tuesday (December
30, 1890) in the 68th year of his age. The deceased was a native
of Manchester, England, but had lived in this country almost since
boyhood. He was a thorough musician and had been prominently identified
with the profession in this city and State. He was director of the
Beethoven Society in 1849, and conducted the America Band at the
Jennie Lind concert in Providence. He was the leader of the Fourth
R. I. Regimental Band during the war, and in 1862 assumed the leadership
of the band of the Naval Academy. He was the first instructor of
the Newport Band. A widow and one son, Mr. F. W. Marshall, survive
him. |
