Class Petty Officer Anthony A. Asero, USN
Musician First Class Anthony Asero was born in Washington, DC and grew up in Bowie, Maryland. He began his musical studies on drums in 1979, and in 1986 graduated from De Matha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Md. He attended the University of Maryland (College Park) as a full scholarship student of Ronald Barnett, and completed a bachelor of music degree in 1991. In 1992 he won the Homer Ulrich Memorial Competition at the University of Maryland and received a master's degree in music in 1993. While a student at Maryland, Petty Officer Asero began a professional career that remains very active today, performing with such noted ensembles as the National and Baltimore Symphony Orchestras, as well as the Chautaugua, New York Symphony and the Washington Opera Orchestra. He served as an instructor of percussion from 1990 to 1993 at De Matha Catholic High School and in 1992, was a lecturer in percussion repertoire at the University of Maryland. In addition to his studies with Ronald Barnett at the University of Maryland, other teachers that have influenced Petty Officer Asero include John Richardson, Tony Ames, Chris Lamb, Alan Abel, and Don Liuzzi. In 1993 Petty Officer Asero joined the United States Navy Band in Washington, DC as percussionist and xylophone soloist, assistant timpanist, and enlisted conductor. In 1998 he was featured as xylophone soloist on the Navy Bands national tour. During his eight years with the Navy Band he performed in most of the 50 states as well as Russia and Sweden. In August, 2001, MU1 Asero transferred to the United States Naval Academy Band where he performs with the Concert, Marching, and Ceremonial Bands. MU1 Asero wears the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Navy Good Conduct Award, National Defense Service Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
