Petty Officer John F. Babcock, USN
Chief Musician John F. Babcock hails from Fallston, Maryland, and graduated from Fallston High School in 1983. He earned his Bachelor of Music degree in music education and a Performers' Certificate in trumpet from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University in 1987. Continuing his studies at Peabody, he completed his Master of Music degree in trumpet performance in 1989. During his time at Peabody, Chief Babcock toured the U.S.S.R. as principal trumpet of the Peabody Symphony Orchestra, was a National Finalist of the Music Teacher's National Association / Wurlitzer College Brass Competition, winner of the Baltimore Music Club College Brass Competition, and the first recipient of the Peabody Institute's Alice and Leary Taylor Prize. Chief Babcock's professional experience includes: Founder and first trumpet of the Carrollton Brass, performances with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Opera Orchestra, Bach Society of Baltimore, Baltimore Chorale Arts, Frederick Chorale, Handel Choir of Baltimore, Annapolis Chorale, Mike Surratt and the Continentals of Washington, D.C., and solo appearances on many regional concert series. Chief Babcock is on the faculty of Frederick Community College, Anne Arundel Community College, Peabody Preparatory, and Severn School. In 1991 Chief Babcock enlisted in the Navy and reported to the United States Naval Academy Band as trumpet instrumentalist. He performs with the concert band, ceremonial and marching units and serves as duty bugler. Chief Babcock is also founder and Chief in Charge of the Brass Ensemble, Chief in Charge of the "Gold" duty brass quintet, trumpet supply officer, Partnership in Education committee member, and MWR committee member.
