Petty Officer John F. Babcock, USN
Chief Musician John F. Babcock hails from Baltimore, Maryland, and graduated from Fallston High School in 1983. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree in music education and a Performers' Certificate in trumpet from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University in 1987. Continuing his studies at Peabody, he completed a Master of Music degree in trumpet performance in 1989. During his time at Peabody, MUC Babcock toured the U.S.S.R. as principal trumpet of the Peabody Symphony Orchestra, was a National Finalist in the Music Teacher's National Association / Wurlitzer College Brass Competition, winner of the Baltimore Music Club College Brass Competition, and the first recipient of the Peabody Institute's Alice and Leary Taylor Prize. MUC Babcock's professional experience includes performances with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Opera Orchestra, Bach Society of Baltimore, Baltimore Chorale Arts, Frederick Chorale, Handel Choir of Baltimore, Annapolis Chorale, and Mike Surratt and the Continentals of Washington, D.C. He is founder and first trumpet of the Carrollton Brass. MUC Babcock has served on the faculties of the Frederick Community College, Anne Arundel Community College, Peabody Preparatory, and Friends School of Baltimore, where he has taught applied trumpet. He was director of middle school bands at both the McDonogh and Severn Schools, and taught general music grades K-8 at The School of the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen, Baltimore. In 1991 MUC Babcock auditioned and was selected for assignment to the U.S. Naval Academy Band. He currently performs as trumpeter with the concert band, marching band, brass quintet, and ceremonial units. His collateral duties include Chief in Charge (CIC) of Music for Recruiting, principal trumpet and section leader in the concert band and CIC of the Brass Ensemble. MUC Babcock has been awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, The Navy Good Conduct Medal (6 awards), National Defense Service Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
