Senior Chief Petty Officer James M. Bean, USN
Trumpeter, Naval Academy Band

A native of Beverly, Massachusetts, Senior Chief James Bean began trumpet studies at the age of 12. As a member of the Massachusetts Youth Wind Ensemble of the New England Conservatory of Music, he performed as principal trumpet on tours of France and Italy. A student of Naval Academy Band alumnus, Dr. Robert Stibler, he earned his Bachelor of music degree in trumpet from the University of New Hampshire. While there he performed as principal trumpet in the wind symphony, orchestra and was a member of the faculty brass quintet. As lead trumpet with the university jazz ensemble he had the good fortune to perform with such jazz greats as Phil Wilson, Eddie Daniels, and Clark Terry. A member of the first All American College Orchestra, Epcot Center, Disney World, Senior Chief Bean performed as assistant principal trumpet and was featured as soloist on several occasions.

After joining the United States Naval Academy Band in 1986, he was appointed to the concert band as principal trumpeter in 1988. He continues to perform in this capacity and is featured as a soloist regularly. In addition to the concert band, he has performed with the jazz ensemble and is the leader of the brass quintet. He is currently the Chief in Charge of the band's ceremonial unit. Senior Chief Bean wears the Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal (four awards), Meritorious Unit Citation (two awards), and National Defense Service Medal (two awards).
