Musician First Class Sheila Cullen, a native of Marietta, GA, graduated from Alan C. Pope High School in 1998. While in high school she performed as principal clarinetist with the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra and Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony. She then attended Indiana University, where she studied clarinet with James Campbell. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree in clarinet performance in 2002 and a Master of Music degree in music theory in 2004.

Prior to joining the Naval Academy Band, MU1 Cullen performed with the Owensboro (KY) Symphony, and served as clarinet faculty at Clemson University. She also taught private students at the Atlanta Music Academy, Lassiter Music Institute, Kennesaw Mountain High School, Pope High School, and Classic Winds.

In June 2006, MU1 Cullen auditioned and was selected for assignment to the U.S. Naval Academy Band. She performs as clarinetist with the concert band, marching band, Clarinet Quartet, Chamber Winds, and ceremonial units. She also serves as Leading Petty Officer of the Clarinet Quartet, Leading Petty Officer of the Educational Outreach Program, and as Assistant Operations.

MU1 Cullen has been awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Navy Pistol Marksmanship Ribbon.
