Chief Petty Officer David S. Hanner, USN
Master Chief Musician David Hanner is a native of Dover, Ohio. He studied at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio and graduated from the Conservatory of Music at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio with a bachelor’s degree in music education. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in musicology from The Catholic University of America. Prior to joining the Navy, he performed with the Charleston Symphony and the National Symphony of Nicaragua. After enlisting in the Navy in 1982, MUCM Hanner completed recruit training at RTC Great Lakes, Illinois and attended the Navy School of Music, where he graduated first in his class. Subsequent tours included the Pacific Fleet Band at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and the ATLANTIC Fleet Band in Norfolk, Virginia. During his tour in Norfolk, he auditioned and was selected for assignment to the U.S. Naval Academy Band, transferring to Annapolis in 1990. His collateral duties have included Chief in Charge of ceremonial band and Leading Chief of the concert band and Chamber Winds. As Leading Chief of the Chamber Winds, the ensemble was selected for the first time to perform at the prestigious International Midwest Clinic in Chicago. He currently holds the position of principal bassoonist in the concert band. MUCM Hanner has been awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation (2 awards), Navy Good Conduct Medal (7 awards), National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), Navy Expert Pistol Shot Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
