Chief Petty Officer David S. Hanner, USN
Master Chief Musician David S. Hanner is a native of Dover, Ohio. He attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio and graduated from Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio with a Bachelor Degree in Music Education. Prior to joining the naval service he was a member of the Charleston Symphony, the National Symphony of Nicaragua and was a band director for the Alliance City Schools in Alliance, Ohio. Enlisting in the Navy music program in 1982, he completed recruit training at RTC Great Lakes, Illinois and attended the Armed Forces School of Music graduating first in his class. He then served tours of duty with the Pacific Fleet Band at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and the Atlantic Fleet Band in Norfolk, Virginia. Hanner began duty as a bassoon instrumentalist with The United States Naval Academy Band in 1990. Collateral assignments have included assistant band librarian, wind quintet, enlisted conductor, chief in charge of ceremonial blue band, woodwind section leader, band historian, event coordinator for the band's sesquicentennial celebration, Leading Chief Petty Officer of the Concert Band and the Chamber Winds. His military awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation (2 awards), Navy Good Conduct Medal (5 awards), National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), Navy Expert Pistol Marksman's and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. During off duty hours, Master Chief Hanner enjoys spending time with his family, making reeds, gardening, studying history and classical music.
