Class Petty Officer Zachary L. Hollister, USN
Trombonist, Naval Academy Band
Musician
First Class Zachary Hollister was born in Palm Springs, California and
grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He has a bachelor of music degree
from the New England Conservatory of Music where he studied with Douglas
Yeo. His other teachers include Murray Crewe, Carl Jackson, and Frank
Farina.
Prior to joining the Navy, Petty Officer Hollister was an active freelance
musician in New England, performing on multiple occasions with the Boston
Pops, Rhode Island Philharmonic, and New Hampshire Symphony Orchestras.
From 2002-2005, MU1 Hollister served as bass trombonist of the New Bedford
Symphony Orchestra and performed two seasons with the Monomoy Theatre
on Cape Cod. Petty Officer Hollister has marched in the Tournament of
Roses Parade, performed two acts of Wagner's Ring Cycle with the Tanglewood
Music Center Orchestra under the direction of Maestro James Levine, toured
with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, and recorded for the "Price
of Freedom: Americans at War" exhibition video, on display at the
Gehring Center of the Smithsonian Institute's National Museum of American
History in Washington, DC.
Petty Officer Hollister enlisted in the U.S. Navy in June of 2005 and
reported for duty the following December. He currently serves as bass
trombonist in the concert band, trombone quartet, and Next Wave Jazz Ensemble
as well as in ceremonial and marching units.
His military awards include the National Defense Service Medal and the
Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
In his spare time, Petty Officer Hollister enjoys sailing, golfing, cooking,
hiking, and photography.
