First Class Petty Officer Kevin T. Meyer, USN
Percussionist, Naval Academy Band

Musician First Class Kevin Meyer is a native of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He received a bachelor of music education degree from Brigham Young University (BYU) in 2004 and a master of music in percussion performance from East Carolina University (ECU) in 2007. Prior to arriving at the United States Naval Academy Band, he was an Associate Instructor at Indiana University. As a graduate student at ECU, he taught Percussion Methods, Percussion Players Percussion Ensemble, Applied Percussion and arranged music and instructed the Marching Pirates Drumline. Petty Officer Meyer’s teachers include Ron Brough, Jay Lawrence, Randall Beach, Jonathan Wacker, Kevin Bobo, John Tafoya, Craig Hetrick and Steve Houghton.

Petty Officer Meyer is active as an educator, performer and marching percussion arranger. He has taught and arranged marching percussion music for award-winning percussion sections in Utah, South Dakota and North Carolina. He has performed with the BalletWest Orchestra in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Paquito d’Rivera at the Moab Music Festival in Moab, Utah. In 2001, he won the Utah Percussive Arts Society Rudimental Snare Drum Solo competition. He was section leader of the 2002 Utah Winter Olympic Band Drumline, which performed at various venues throughout the Olympics. In addition, Petty Officer Meyer has performed with the Tar River Symphony Orchestra, Tar River Symphonic Band, as Principal Percussionist of the Eastern Symphony Orchestra, and drumset/percussionist for the Loessin Summer Theatre. He also performed in Kevin Bobo’s clinic at the 2007 Percussive Arts Society International Convention with the Indiana University Percussion Ensemble.

Petty Officer Meyer has appeared as a soloist with the Tar River Symphonic Band in Greenville, North Carolina, the ECU Wind Ensemble, the ECU Percussion Ensemble, and the BYU Percussion Ensemble; and at the Young Musicians Camp in Evanston, Wyoming. While attending BYU, he performed at the International Association of Jazz Educators Convention in New York City with Synthesis Jazz Big Band. He also toured the eastern United States as Principal Percussionist with the BYU Chamber Orchestra.

In August 2008, Petty Officer Meyer joined the United States Naval Academy Band where he performs with the Concert, Marching, and Ceremonial Bands.
