Lieutenant Junior Grade Scott Mythen holds a bachelor of arts degree in music education from the University of Minnesota, and a master’s degree in human relations from the University of Oklahoma. Prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy, LTJG Mythen worked as a band director and English teacher in Lake County, Florida from 1994-1996.

LTJG Mythen enlisted in the Navy in 1996 and attended Recruit Training at RTC, Great Lakes in Chicago, Illinois. After recruit training, he attended Musician "A" School at the Armed Forces School of Music, in Norfolk, Virginia. Graduating early, he transferred to Navy Band Great Lakes in 1997.

While a member of Navy Band Great Lakes, LTJG Mythen performed throughout the Midwest with the big band, brass quintet, ceremonial band, parade band, and concert band. His numerous duties included trumpet instrumentalist, conductor, drum major, vocalist, sound technician, morale welfare and recreation coordinator, automated data processing petty officer, and public affairs representative.

He detached in 2001 to attend the Unit Leader Course at the Armed Forces School of Music. Upon graduation in 2002, LTJG Mythen transferred to the SEVENTH Fleet Band in Yokosuka, Japan. During his assignment with the SEVENTH Fleet Band he deployed throughout Asia, performing in the brass quintet, rock band, big band, ceremonial band, and parade band. His duties included trumpet instrumentalist, conductor, drum major, vocalist, sound technician, supply and fiscal petty officer, unit leader for the brass quintet, in addition to leading petty officer and musical director for the big band and ceremonial band.

LTJG Mythen transferred back to the Armed Forces School of Music in 2005 to attend the Senior Musician Course. After graduation in 2006, he accepted orders for the SIXTH Fleet Band and assumed the role of operations coordinator. During his tenure as operations coordinator he facilitated increased band engagements in direct support of Commander Naval Forces Europe’s vision of “South and East” support of Africa, the Balkans, and the Mediterranean, Black Sea, and Caspian Sea regions. LTJG Mythen was selected as the SIXTH Fleet Band Sailor of the Year for 2006. In 2007, the SIXTH Fleet Band merged with the Allied Forces Band Naples to become the U.S. Naval Forces Europe Band. LTJG Mythen played an instrumental role in merging the operations and scheduling of both bands.

Commissioned a Limited Duty Officer Bandmaster in October 2007, LTJG Mythen attended Officer Development School at Newport, Rhode Island. He transferred to the U. S. Naval Academy Band in November 2007, where he currently serves as the Assistant Director.

LTJG Mythen holds the Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS) qualification. His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation (two awards), Navy Good Conduct award (three awards), National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (two awards), and the Overseas Service Ribbon (four awards).
