Class Petty Officer Thomas M. Pitta, USN

Musician
First Class Thomas Pitta is a native of Eldersburg, Maryland. He graduated
from Loyola High School, in Towson, Maryland in 1987, and then earned
a Bachelors of Arts (English) degree from Loyola College, Baltimore in
1991. Petty Officer Pitta went on to Towson University, earning a Bachelor
of Science and a Master of Music degree in 1996. While at Towson, he studied
double bass privately with Drew Gress and Paul Johnson and composition
with Hank Levy.
Petty Officer Pitta reported to the United States Naval Academy Band in
March 1999. In addition to performing his duties in the Concert Band,
Ceremonial units and the Commandant's Combo, Petty Officer Pitta has performed
with Naval Academy Band Units ranging from the Chamber Winds to the Electric
Brigade. In addition to his musical duties, Petty Officer Pitta has worked
as Operations Assistant, Assistant Educational Services Officer, and has
volunteered on the band's Morale, Welfare and Recreation committee.
His military awards include the Meritorious Unit Commendation, Good Conduct
Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Expert Pistol Ribbon. He was
the Naval Academy Band Sailor of the Quarter for 3rd Quarter 2001 and
3rd Quarter 2002.
In his off duty time, Petty Officer Pitta is interested in helping young
musicians. He volunteers to help local elementary school orchestra programs
and he is a member of the Peabody Preparatory and Anne Arundel Community
College faculties. Petty Officer Pitta also enjoys fishing, gardening,
cooking and spending time with his family.
