First Class Petty Officer Colin A. Renick, USN
Saxophonist, Naval Academy Band

Petty Officer Colin A. Renick is a native of Belmont, MA. He attended Ithaca College where he studied jazz and film, and earned a bachelor of science degree in film production. He then decided to pursue a career in music, and earned a bachelor of arts in music from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Petty Officer Renick then attended Indiana University, where he earned a master of music degree in saxophone performance and a master of music degree in jazz studies. He has studied saxophone with Ed Yadzinsky, Otis Murphy, and Thomas Walsh, jazz improvisation with David Baker, Pat Harbison, and Steve Brown, and jazz arranging/composing with David Baker and Brent Wallarab. He served as part-time Professor of Music at DePauw University in 2006.

Petty Officer Renick’s professional credits include a cross-section of musical styles, from classical to jazz to R&B to free improvisation. Highlights include performances with the Genkin Philharmonic, the Odean Pope Saxophone Choir, David Baker’s Jazz Ensemble, David Sanchez, and the Busselli-Wallarab Jazz Orchestra. In addition, Petty Officer Renick was a founding member of several original ensembles, including the Saxophone Cartel quintet, and the ten-piece funk band, Mojai. He is active as a composer and arranger of music in all styles and for ensembles of all sizes.

Petty Officer Renick enlisted in the Navy in 2007 and reported for duty as a saxophone instrumentalist with the U.S. Naval Academy Band, where he performs with the Concert Band, ceremonial and marching units, and the Commandant’s Combo.
