Class Petty Officer Devona L. Schiller, USN
Musician First Class Devona Lee Schiller is a native of Baltimore County, Maryland. She holds a bachelor of music education and flute performance from James Madison University and a master of music in conducting from George Mason University. While in her junior year at JMU she was named JMU and Virginia Music Teachers Association Concerto Competition Winner. In 1997 she earned first prize in the Sigma Alpha Iota Scholarship Competition and served as JMU Flute Club President. Petty Officer Schiller can be heard on the JMU Flute Choir feature compact disc Sounds and Colors. Petty Officer Schiller entered the United States Navy in 1998. During her first two years in the Navy, she was assigned to the ATLANTIC Fleet Band in Norfolk, Virginia. There she performed in the woodwind quintet and as Principal Flutist in the wind ensemble. She also served as a vocalist, operations assistant, and was featured with the wind ensemble as a flute soloist and conductor. In 1999 she was chosen as Junior Sailor of the Quarter. In 2000, Petty Officer Schiller was selected by the United States Naval Academy Band as a flutist in the concert, ceremonial and marching bands. Since joining the organization, she has served as a career counselor, administrative and chamber recital series assistant, and performs on occasion as a vocalist with the band. Petty Officer Schiller's military awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Navy Pistol Sharpshooter Ribbon. Petty Officer Schiller
has studied flute with Carol Kniebusch Noe, Laurie Baefsky, Alice Weinreb,
and Judy Lapple, and conducting with Anthony Maiello. In her spare time,
she teaches flute privately, performs with the Annapolis Wind Symphony,
adjudicates local honor bands and festivals, serves in the music ministry
