Chief Musician Karl Schultz, euphonium instrumentalist with the U.S. Naval Academy Band, has had a diverse musical and military career. He began his military career in 1993 by joining the Army and serving as the euphonium soloist with The U.S. Continental Army Band, Ft. Monroe, VA. A frequent soloist with the band, he was featured on the band’s compact disc entitled TheSpirit of Victory. While stationed in the Hampton Roads area, he also performed with the Tidewater Winds, the Dominion Brass Band, and joined the Virginia Symphony to perform Gustav Holst’s The Planets. Occasionally, he was able to perform in the German Band in “Das Festhaus” at Busch Gardens, Williamsburg, a position he had held during the summers of 1990-1992.

In 1996, Chief Schultz auditioned and was selected for duty with the U.S. Naval Academy Band. Since joining the band, he has been the featured soloist with the Concert Band on several occasions and has been in demand with other ensembles in the area. He was a featured soloist with the U.S. Army Orchestra at the U.S. Army Band’s Tuba/Euphonium Conference in 1999 and gave the world premiere of David Gaines’ Concertino for Euphonium and Concert Band with the Peabody Wind Ensemble. He has stayed active in brass banding by performing on euphonium, baritone, and Eb tenor horn in the Spires Brass Band, the Atlantic Brass Band, and the Baltimore Area Brass Band of the Salvation Army. From 1999-2001 MUC Schultz organized a 16-piece brass band to recreate the original Naval Academy Band from 1852. He personally gathered or arranged all of the music for this ensemble.

In addition to his musical duties, Chief Schultz has worked in the band’s supply office, eventually becoming the Chief Petty Officer in Charge of the supply and fiscal offices. Currently, he is the Leading Chief Petty Officer of the Concert Band.

He holds a bachelor of music degree in euphonium performance from Mansfield University, Mansfield, PA, where he studied with Donald A. Stanley and Stephen P. McEuen.

Chief Schultz has earned the Army Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the Navy Expert Pistol Shot Medal.
