Class Petty Officer Steve J. Tomlinson, USN
Trombonist, Naval Academy Band
Musician First Class Steven J. Tomlinson is a native of Dayton, Ohio. He earned his bachelor of music degree from Morehead State University (MSU) in 1992. At MSU, he played trombone in all university ensembles and was lead trombonist in the Kentucky All State Jazz Band.
MU1 Tomlinson joined the Navy in 1995 as a keyboardist and was first in
his class at the Navy School of Music. Upon graduation, he reported to
the Atlantic Fleet Band, where he performed on keyboard and trombone in
the jazz band, jazz combo, rock band, and trombone quartet, as well as
concert, ceremonial and marching bands. He played piano on NBC's "Today
Show" broadcast during Fleet Week in NYC, and toured Africa (WATC)
and South America (UNITAS) in 1998. He transferred to the Sixth Fleet
Band, and toured extensively in Europe and as far east as Turkey, Russia,
and Bahrain. His next duty station was Navy Band Southwest where he toured
with the rock band in California, Nevada, Arizona, Wyoming, Colorado,
and New Mexico. Additionally, he performed several times with the San
Diego Symphony Orchestra.
MU1 Tomlinson reported to the Naval Academy Band in 2006 as trombone instrumentalist
with the Navy's premier contemporary music ensemble, "Electric Brigade." He also performs with marching and ceremonial bands.
His military awards include the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2
awards), Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Good Conduct Award (4
awards), National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal,
Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (3 awards), and
Navy Expert Pistol Shot Medal.
