A native Annapolitan, Chief Musician Anthony Valerio graduated from Annapolis High School in 1983. During his early years, he studied with USNA Band alumnus and former Principal Horn of the U.S. Navy Band, James Gollmer. As a student, Chief Valerio performed on Naval Academy Band "Side by Side" concerts in 1982 and 1983. He earned a bachelor of music degree in horn performance from West Virginia University in 1987, and a master of music degree in horn performance from the Peabody Conservatory in 1992, where he studied with David Bakkegard. Prior to his enlistment in the United States Navy, Chief Valerio performed with the All American College Orchestra at Walt Disney World in 1986 and the Grand Teton Orchestral Seminar in 1988. In 1987, he toured the Soviet Union as Principal Horn of the Peabody Symphony Orchestra. Currently, Chief Valerio is adjunct professor of horn at St. Mary's College of Maryland and is fourth horn of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra. He also performs regularly with various local symphonies including the Baltimore Symphony and the Chesapeake Orchestra and is a founding member of the Bayfield Brass Quintet.

In 1989, Chief Valerio enlisted in the Navy and reported to the United States Naval Academy Band as a horn instrumentalist. He performs with the Concert Band, Brass Quintet, and ceremonial and marching units. Additionally, Chief Valerio serves as USNA Band's Command Fitness Leader and Ceremonial Unit leader.

His awards include the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy Good Conduct (four awards), National Defense Service Medal (two awards), and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

In his off duty hours, Chief Valerio enjoys weightlifting, sailing, and spending time with his family.
